ROY ORBISON

The Lone Star

Roy Kelton Orbison the American singer and songwriter

who was born in Texas

Analysis:    Why this title ? - Roy was born in Texas and to me he was The Loan Star, apart from when he was with The Traveling Wilburys. However, The Texan flag is well known for its prominent single white star pictured here, which gives the flag its commonly used name: "Lone Star Flag". Also, Roy used to frequent The Lone Star Café, a Texan themed country music venue at 61 Fifth at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 13th Street, New York.

The design of the picture was based on the cross which Roy used to wear around his neck. There are many ideas as to why he wore it, but I believe it was for his love of motorcycles and the fact that he was a Bible-based Christian. His first wife, Claudette, died in a motorcycle accident and he found his faith a great comfort. This cross symbol is widely used in the chopper world by chopper builders and riders. You will often see it associated with Harley-Davison motorcycles.

The picture was based on this cross.  It has not been centred and the black back negative shapes, transform to become the positive shape of the cross, together with the fretwork from his guitar positioned towards his vocal chords. We are reminded of this talented Texan guitarist with his black hair, dark glasses and distinctive voice.
