The Nest - The Ledge and its Legends

Analysis :  "Meet on the Ledge" the song by British folk rock band Fairport Convention, released in 1968 and composed by, then member, Richard Thompson. The song's title comes from a large, low-hanging tree limb on which Richard Thompson used to play as a child, and which he and his friends had dubbed "The Ledge". The song has since become Fairport Convention's unofficial anthem.

Dave (Peggy)Pegg, Simon Nicol, Chris Leslie, Ric Sanders and Gerry Conway (Fairport Convention) meeting on the Ledge. Surrounding the tree are stones which represent their fans and at the roots is some alcohol  - which always brings a smile.

The bell was installed in the tower of St Mary's in Cropredy village in 2007, which was funded by generous donations from fans attending Fairport's annual music festival. The bell is inscribed 'Fairport Convention Festival Bell' and is also pictured on their album “Festival Bell” which was released in 2011.  There are 11 birds fleeing the nest and they represent past members of the band.

Fairport Convention - Wintour 2022: Live Review - At the Barrier

"Speaking of the programme - the cover sketch (a pencil dawing by Hertfordshire artist Lindsay Bex of the band members, complete with instruments, perched in their very own tree) is wonderful and worth the price of the programme on its own!" -  by John Barlass on 10th February 2022 At the Barrier (live music, reviews and opinion)

The original was signed by the band and donated to the Event Mobility charity August 2022
